# PEMDAS

Math necessitates a great deal of calculation, which can be tedious at times. However, if we tackle it with a systematic approach, it will be a lot easier. You’ve probably heard about BODMAS (Bracket of Division, Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction). PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction) is a similar concept. PEMDAS is also a rule that explains how to simplify any math expression in the proper order. In Canada and India, they say BODMAS but in us they say PEMDAS.

## Meaning of Pemdas

Sometimes some mathematical calculations involve so many operations that you might be confused as to which part to compute first. Whether to begin on the left and work your way right? Should you start on the right and work your way to the left, or vice versa? Calculating them in the correct order is crucial, as doing so incorrectly will result in an inaccurate solution. This is where the PEMDAS rule, more commonly known as  BODMAS  came into existence.

In the word PEMDAS, P stands for parenthesis, E stands for exponents, M for multiplication, D stands for division, A stands for addition, and S stands for subtraction. The order of the letters in PEMDAS tells you what to calculate first, second, third, and so on, until the calculations are complete, given two or more operations in a single statement.

Let us understand PEMDAS with help of an example

3 * 4 + 8, We could simply multiply first and then add to get 20. We also have the option to add first and then multiply and get 36. What do you feel? Which answer is correct. As far as the PEMDAS rule is concerned the correct answer is 20, cause according to this rule multiplication should be done first, and then addition

## Order of Operations (PEMDAS)

Always start from left and continue right.

P: Use parentheses or brackets to complete the computation or equation, such as small brackets. Brackets are given precedence.

E: Exponential expressions should be calculated before performing multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction operations.

MD: Multiply or divide whatever appears first in the equation.

AS: Finally, conduct addition or subtraction, whatever comes first.

## Examples

Example 1 : Calculate 45 – 2(30 + 16 / 4 * 3 – 22) + 10.

Step 1: According to PEMDAS we will first solve whatever is there within the parenthesis, we will begin with  the exponential

45 – 2(30 + 16 / 4 * 3 – 4) + 10.

Step 2:  the comes the division part

45 – 2(30 + 4 * 3 – 4) + 10.

Step 3: Now the multiplication

45 – 2(30 + 12 – 4) + 10

Step 4 solving inside the bracket

45 -2(38) + 10

Further simplifying we get

45 – 76 + 10

Step 5 : Now  you can carry out the addition and subtraction

45-86 = – 41

Therefore 45 – 2(30 + 16 / 4 * 3 – 22) + 10 = – 41

Example 2: Solve 60 ÷ (6 x 4) + 32

Solution:

60 ÷ (6 x 4) + 32

Following the PEMDAS rule, we should first perform the operation in parentheses.

=60 ÷ 24 + 32

Perform the exponent/power operation

= 60 ÷ 24 + 9

Division should be performed.

= 2.5 + 9

And at the end , addition should be performed

= 11.5

Therefore, 60 ÷ (6 x 4) + 32 = 11.5
