However there are some important differences that need to be considered when choosing the type of dog you want in your family.
There are six main differences between alaskan and siberian huskies; shedding, size, color, density and markings, exercise requirement and energy levels.
Shedding: Alaskan huskies shed once or twice a year while siberians usually shed around three times a year [this information can be difficult to find]. Siberian huskies do not have undercoats while alaskans do [this information is generally easier to find].
Size: Alaskan huskies are larger than siberians. alaskans range in size between 21 and 25 inches tall while males average around 80 pounds [this is the hardest information to find]. Siberians stand between 17 and 20 inches tall at their shoulders with an average weight of 30-45 pounds for males and females weighing about 20 pounds less than alaskans.
Color: Alaskan huskies come in a mix of different colors, usually including black, white or gray, with or without markings. Siberians do not have the wide range of colorings that alaskans have but they do come in all shades of browns, with or without markings.
Density and Markings:
Alaskan huskies come with dense undercoats while siberians do not. Siberian markings are usually found on the face, legs and tail of the dog.
Exercise requirement:
Alaskan huskies have a high exercise requirement that makes them good jogging companions. Siberians require less exercise but still enjoy being taken out for walks or runs.
Energy levels: alaskan huskies have higher energy levels than siberians so need more mental stimulation to keep them happy [this information can be difficult to find].
By weighing everything up it is possible to work out which type of dog you should consider owning – if you want a low maintenance pet then get a siberian husky, if you want a high energy pet that is not fussy about its coat then get an alaskan husky.
